Online nets £1 in every £10 spent on UK retail

Just over £1 in every £10 spent in a UK retail transaction in February was spent online, according to the latest official retail sales figures.

The Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) Retail Sales Bulletin for February 2012, published today, found that 10.7% of all UK retail sales were made over the internet – or £1.07 in every £10. The bulletin put the weekly average spent online at £573.6m, up from the £432.6m estimated for February 2011, when that was equivalent to 8.3% of all retail sales. Read the full article here.

Burgeoning E-Commerce Puts U.K. Out in Front

The U.K. Internet economy contributed £121 billion ($191.7 billion) to the overall economy in 2010, representing 8.3% of GDP, the largest percentage of any of the Group of 20 industrial and developing nations, according to a new report. 

Boston Consulting Group said the U.K.'s Internet economy will grow to £225 billion by 2016. Read the full article here.

Retailers must plan increased investments in mobile as consumers demand more location-based tech

Nearly 90% of retailers believe that location and mapping will be a big trend in m-commerce in 2012 and that social will also play a big role in multichannel, finds a study by strategic information management company Stibo Systems. However, only a quarter of retailers are actually planning on investing in location-based and geo-spatial technology this year.

The study –which was undertaken in January 2012 by independent research house Coleman Parkes and surveyed 100 senior executives at the UK’s top retailers – found that cross-channel retailing remains a clear priority for UK retailers, with more than three quarters (78%) of respondents stating that strategic investment to enhance consumers’ multi-channel experience will drive retail sales this year. Facebook has an overall economic impact of €2.6 billion in the UK

Across the EU and Switzerland, Facebook enabled an economic impact of €15.3 billion in 2011, supporting 232,000 jobs. Sellerdeck Q4 2011 Survey Shows Marginal Uplift in Sales for UK SME Online Retailers

West Byfleet, Surrey – 17 January 2012– The sixth quarterly UK online sales survey conducted by E-Commerce specialist Sellerdeck shows a slight increase in online retail sales for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to Q4 2010.

The research reports an average of only a 1.5% increase in sales revenue as well as a 1.6% increase in the numbers of orders processed in the three months to 31 December 2011, when compared to the same quarter in 2010. However, there was over a 3% increase in the average number of orders processed by each company in Q4 2011 when compared to Q3 2011.

Online shoppers to spend nearly £8 billion this Christmas. 

UK consumers are expected to spend almost £8 billion online this Christmas, despite tough economic conditions – a 14 per cent increase on last year, writes Simon Wicks. Research by the online retail membership body IMRG predicts that online shopping sales will hit £7.75 billion over the five weeks from Monday, 28 November – also known as ‘Cyber Monday’. Almost half (£3.72 billion) is expected to be spent in the first two weeks alone. The forecast is based on data from 100 online retailers and reflects the trend seen in the past two years in the run-up to Christmas. Read the full article here.

Good weather warms up internet sales.

Warm weather, a late Easter and the Royal Wedding brought a welcome boost to online sales growth in April, according to figures out today. The British Retail Consortium’s monthly report on retail sales levels showed that non-food, non-store sales rose by a healthy 13.7% in April, compared to last April. Read the full article here.

UK will lead E-Commerce sales in Europe for next five years says Forrester. Despite the challenging economy, European online retail sales grew 18% in 2010, and will grow 13% in 2011, reaching €92bn, according to new five year forecast from Forrester Research. Growth drivers include new online buyers–57% of adults now shop online–and higher spend per capita. Across Europe 10% year-on-year compound growth can be expected to continue for the next five years.
